New Year, New Design Trends
By Mandy Gradert, Graphic Designer
There’s a lot of possibility for new design trends in 2017. As a designer myself, I feel pretty confident predicting that graphic designers will continue to push the limits of design in both the print and digital worlds this year, and I’m excited to see what we come up with. Beyond maintaining a general trend toward minimalism, here are a few trends that I think are going to be in the spotlight this year.
GREENERY
I was happy to find that Pantone’s color of the year for 2017 was a bright and earthy shade of green called Greenery. (I really like green!) Described as fresh and zesty, Greenery evokes the ever-present topic of the environment. With healthy food resolutions and organic tendencies on the rise, Greenery symbolizes a fresh, new start and a connection with nature.
ILLUSTRATION
Illustration design is becoming more prevalent across all mediums, but especially in web design. Combined with graphics and photography, illustration adds a handmade element that immediately connects with the consumer.
MODERN RETRO
It’s a new spin on an old look. All types of retro logos and badges are coming back into style, but with a modern twist. Simplistic designs are replacing a slightly cluttered look with the same style and flair as the originals.
Whether these trends last or not, it’s fun to explore what’s currently popular and making an impact in the design industry. Wishing everyone a visually delightful 2017!
