2016 Trends Forecast
By Caliber Creative
Champagne, sequins, and awesome friends is how I like to kickoff the New Year. January 1 represents a chance for new beginnings in health, relationships, and – my personal favorite – trends. Designers can choose to embrace trends or stray away, but they cannot ignore them. Graphic, fashion, and home décor trends can define a moment in time. The following are a few looks we will see moving into 2016.
Trend #1: Rose Quartz and Serenity
First off, let me admit that my initial reaction to seeing Pantone’s 2016 swatch selections was less than impressed. I’ve never been drawn to pastels, especially flat swatches of pale pink and blue. However, these cotton candy colors have an ethereal quality that comes to life when applied to design.

Trend #2: Geometric Shapes
Geometric shapes have been very prevalent in design as of late. Faceted polygon designs use flat color shapes to give dimension. Triangles, circles, and squares are used with simple overlays and detailed photos. Often a photo is bound within the shape, which is a great way to leave clean space for copy.

Trend #3: Overlapping
Overlapping photos with simple shapes is a nice technique used to add a feeling of dimension and space to an otherwise flat design. Below, floral imagery wraps around type bound within a rectangle. The Dissolution design shows that this look is not limited to nature as the astronaut floats through the square.

Wishing everyone a happy 2016!
